Exploring reliance on fuelwood for cooking in the Indian Himalayas

As part of my role as a research scientist in UBC’s Landscape Ecology Lab, I collaborated on a project that explored ecological and socioeconomic factors that contribute to households in the Indian Himalayas relying on wood for cooking above all other sources of fuel. To answer this question, we investigated the roles of forest access (through forest cover, forest type, and proximity), remoteness (elevation, rugosity, and distance to roads), and socioeconomic status (through deriving a weighted indicator using variables from the national census) in over 2000 rural, montane villages in Uttarakhand, India. My role in this project included data cleaning and processing, data management of diverse datasets, spatial analysis, and statistical analysis, culminating in the production of a manuscript (submitted for review).
